Why I Paint Water — and How to Choose a Piece That Lives With You
Posted on
There’s something about water that always pulls me in.
It’s never still, yet it carries a quiet sense of calm. It reflects what’s around it, but never in exactly the same way twice. Whether I’m standing by a river in Wisconsin or remembering a place I’ve traveled to, I find myself returning to the same feeling—the movement, the light, the way a moment can feel both fleeting and timeless.
That’s where many of my paintings begin.
Water, for me, is not just a subject. It’s a way of observing the world. The softness of reflections, the shifting colors, the tension between motion and stillness—all of it becomes a way to capture something that’s hard to put into words.
Paintings like Along the River or Bridge Over a River are rooted in these moments. They’re not just landscapes—they’re impressions of being somewhere, of noticing something subtle, and wanting to hold onto it just a little longer.
And yet, when a painting leaves my studio, it begins a completely new life.
Choosing a Painting That Feels Right
One of the questions I’m often asked is: How do I know which piece is right for me?
There isn’t a single answer—but there are a few things I always suggest:
1. Notice what you return to
If a painting stays in your mind, there’s usually a reason. You don’t have to explain it—it’s often instinctive.
2. Think about the feeling, not just the colors
A piece doesn’t just fill a wall. It shapes the atmosphere of a space. Some paintings bring energy, others bring calm. The right one will match how you want a room to feel.
3. Let it become part of your everyday
The best paintings are the ones that reveal something new over time. A reflection you didn’t notice before, a shift in light—it grows with you.
For me, painting is about capturing a moment. For you, it becomes part of a life.
If you’ve ever felt drawn to water—the quiet, the movement, the reflection—you may find something familiar here.
And if a piece speaks to you, it’s likely already yours in some way.
